It is normal to learn to live your life for others’ approval. This stems from our human desire for a sense of belonging. However, putting yourself first is an influential practice that leads to a happy and fulfilled life. Nonetheless, it can be difficult to begin living for yourself when you are accustomed to living for others. 

What Does It Mean to Live for Yourself?

Living for yourself means making your own needs, desires, and well-being a priority in your life. It involves honoring your own values, passions, and aspirations, rather than constantly seeking validation or approval from others. Living for yourself means taking ownership of your life and making choices that align with your authentic self.

Growing up, fear and pressure influenced my behavior, expressions, and attitude. The thoughts of those who knew me determined every decision I made and action I took. I lived to please others and meet their expectations, which meant I lived for external validation and approval because I cared more about what others thought instead of what I thought. Consequently, I set my goals based on what others wanted for me. 

Although I wanted to live my life on my own terms, I worried more about others’ opinions on it. My mind believed that acceptance and admiration from others was essential for survival, so I compromised myself to earn validation.

Why Is It Hard to Live for Yourself?

Living for oneself can be challenging for several reasons:

  • External Expectations: Society, family, friends, and cultural influences can impose expectations and beliefs about how one should live their life. These external pressures can make it difficult to prioritize one’s own needs and desires over those of others.
  • Fear of Judgment and Rejection: The fear of being judged, criticized, or rejected by others can hinder one’s ability to live authentically. The desire for social acceptance and approval can lead to conforming to societal norms, even if it means sacrificing personal fulfillment.
  • Conditioning and Conditioning: Throughout life, individuals are often conditioned to prioritize the needs and expectations of others, such as pleasing parents or meeting societal standards of success. Breaking free from these ingrained patterns can be challenging.
  • Lack of Self-Understanding: Many people may struggle with self-discovery and understanding their own needs, passions, and values. Without clarity about what truly matters to them, it becomes difficult to make choices aligned with their authentic selves.
  • Guilt and Obligation: Feelings of guilt or obligation can arise when considering one’s own needs over the needs of others. Taking care of oneself can sometimes be perceived as selfish, leading to internal conflicts and difficulty in setting boundaries.
  • Fear of Change and Uncertainty: Embracing personal growth and living for oneself often involves stepping into the unknown and embracing change. Fear of uncertainty and the comfort of familiar routines can make it hard to break free from the status quo.
  • Lack of Self-Confidence: Low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence can undermine one’s belief in their own worth and abilities. This can make it challenging to assert oneself and pursue personal desires and goals.

After I became conscious of this subconscious behavior of mine, I still struggled to break the pattern. It was so deeply instilled in me that I did not know how to change. I was also aware that rewiring the way I subconsciously think would be hard to overcome, so I continued to live for others and deny myself the life I wanted. All in all, I was unwilling to put in the work and effort to adjust my mindset and live for myself. 

Overcoming these challenges requires self-reflection, self-compassion, and a commitment to personal growth. It may involve seeking support from trusted individuals, setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and gradually stepping outside one's comfort zone. With time and effort, it becomes possible to live a life that is authentic, fulfilling, and true to oneself.

Living for Yourself: Why Should You?

Living for yourself is important for several reasons:

  • Self-Fulfillment: When you live for yourself, you prioritize your own needs, desires, and well-being. This leads to a greater sense of self-fulfillment and personal satisfaction. By aligning your life with your own values and aspirations, you can experience a deeper sense of purpose and meaning.
  • Authenticity: Living for yourself allows you to be true to who you are. It means embracing your unique qualities, interests, and passions, rather than conforming to the expectations of others. Embracing authenticity brings a sense of freedom and allows you to live a life that reflects your true self.
  • Personal Growth: Living for yourself involves pursuing personal growth and self-improvement. It means continuously learning, expanding your skills, and pushing beyond your comfort zone. By focusing on your own development, you can unlock your potential and become the best version of yourself.
  • Emotional Well-being: Prioritizing your own needs and desires contributes to your emotional well-being. It involves practicing self-care, setting boundaries, and nurturing a positive relationship with yourself. By taking care of your own mental and emotional health, you can build resilience and better cope with life’s challenges.
  • Relationships: Living for yourself doesn’t mean being selfish or neglecting others. It means cultivating healthy and authentic relationships based on mutual respect and support. When you prioritize your own well-being, you can show up as a happier and more fulfilled person, which positively impacts your interactions with others.
  • Empowerment: Living for yourself empowers you to take control of your own life. It means making choices and decisions based on what feels right for you, rather than being driven solely by external influences. Taking ownership of your life leads to a greater sense of autonomy, confidence, and empowerment.
  • Setting an Example: By living for yourself, you become an example for others. You inspire those around you to prioritize their own needs, embrace authenticity, and pursue their own dreams. Your actions can encourage others to break free from societal expectations and live lives true to themselves.

By committing to paths influenced by others, I felt trapped in a life that I knew was not meant for me. I knew that I needed to take control of my own life, but I did not truly want to do this until I realized that I did not even know who I was anymore.  In that moment, I finally understood the severity of my problem. It emphasized the necessity for my own sense of identity. Therefore, I faced reality, and this time, I felt inclined to put in the necessary work. 

Ultimately, living for yourself allows you to create a life that is aligned with your own values, aspirations, and desires. It brings a sense of fulfillment, personal growth, and empowerment. By honoring your own needs, you can lead a more authentic, meaningful, and joyful life.

Living for Yourself: How Can You Achieve It?

Here are some steps to help you live for yourself:

  • Self-Reflection: Take time for self-reflection to understand your values, passions, and what truly matters to you. Reflect on your goals, dreams, and what brings you joy and fulfillment. Understanding yourself better will guide your choices and actions.
  • Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to protect your time, energy, and emotional well-being. Learn to say no to commitments or activities that don’t align with your priorities or values. Respect your own needs and ensure they are met before taking on additional responsibilities.
  • Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a priority in your life. Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Prioritize activities that recharge and rejuvenate you, whether it’s practicing mindfulness, engaging in hobbies, exercising, or spending time in nature.
  • Identify and Pursue Your Passions: Identify the activities, hobbies, or causes that ignite your passion and bring you a sense of fulfillment. Make time for these pursuits and integrate them into your daily life. Embracing your passions can bring a deeper sense of purpose and joy.
  • Embrace Authenticity: Be true to yourself and live authentically. Don’t mold yourself to fit societal expectations or the desires of others. Embrace your uniqueness and express yourself honestly, without fear of judgment or rejection. Surround yourself with people who support and accept you for who you are.
  • Make Decisions Based on Your Own Values: When making decisions, consider your own values and what resonates with you. Trust your intuition and inner guidance. Avoid making choices solely to please others or conform to external pressures. Your decisions should reflect your own desires and aspirations.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding you would offer to a loved one. Accept your imperfections and mistakes as part of the learning and growth process.
  • Let Go of External Validation: Release the need for external validation or approval. Seek validation from within, relying on your own judgment and inner wisdom. Trust yourself and your abilities, rather than seeking constant reassurance from others.
  • Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Surround yourself with supportive and positive individuals who uplift and encourage you. Seek out relationships that foster growth, inspiration, and mutual respect. Limit contact with toxic or unsupportive people who drain your energy or discourage your personal growth.
  • Take Ownership of Your Life: Take responsibility for your own happiness, success, and overall well-being. Recognize that you have the power to shape your life and make choices that align with your own needs and desires. Take proactive steps towards creating the life you want.

At first, I did not know how to get from where I was to where I wanted to be. I was unable to recognize where to begin until I realized that I needed to focus on myself and my goals in life. If I wanted to live for myself, I had to learn what matters to me. 

It was an uncomfortable process, but I knew that it was the only way to live a fulfilling life. 

Now that I know what truly matters to me, I go after the things that I truly want. I am not afraid to choose my own path, and I am happier for it. Every decision I make and opportunity I take lead me to the life that I envision for myself. The goals that I set are ones that come from within me; they are what I want to accomplish in life.  

Living for myself has given me a sense of pride in who I am as an individual. I never thought I would say the phrase, “I am proud of myself,” but I am so proud to be the person that I am today.

Remember, living for yourself is a continuous process of self-discovery and growth. It requires self-awareness, courage, and a commitment to prioritize your own well-being and fulfillment. Embrace the journey and be open to learning, adapting, and evolving as you live a life true to yourself.
